Ahangama & Weligama

A surf coast at the southern tip of Sri Lanka, Ahangama and Weligama have been a fixture on the traveling surfer's map for a decade. The cafes and small hotels have grown up around the waves, and the coast still feels like a place rather than a resort. For years the reasons to hesitate were the economy and the flights. Both have improved.

Sri Lanka recorded 2,362,521 international tourist arrivals in 2025, up 15.1 percent and narrowly above the 2018 annual peak. The recovery is not a straight line: arrivals in January to September 2026 ran 1.8 percent below the same period of 2025. Air access is widening. Jetstar launched Melbourne to Colombo in August 2026, and British Airways scheduled its Gatwick to Colombo return from October 23, 2026.

The south coast is attracting further hotel investment, including the Taj project IHCL signed for Weligama in March 2026; the Weligama Bay Marriott already operates. Sri Lanka offers investor residence routes subject to approved investment types and immigration conditions, and a property purchase alone does not establish eligibility.

Land and condominium ownership follow different rules for foreigners, so the title route for each purchase needs confirming with a Sri Lankan lawyer before any money moves.
